Coaching contracts can go from one week, to a few months and even a year or more. It all depends on what you need and how long it will take you to accomplish it.
What do most people do?
All sorts of stuff, good and bad… However, here’s a few tips that most people use as an industry standard.
Most Coaches have set packages and programs already created. Those deetz are on their sales / order pages and terms of service. These are great and you get what you see.
Others will leave it up to you based on what your goals are. This you need to be watchful on. To make sure you get what you need, it’s recommended that you choose shorter time intervals that are based around single goals or outcomes. You can use them as milestones. Once you’ve successfully complete one thing, then you can move on the the next short term contract. (If the Coach will let you.)
But still, how do I know?
As far as evaluating your needs, it’s good to break it down so you can be exact on THE REAL ISSUE to work on!
1.) “What exactly am I being Coached on?”
2.) “When ___(This specific event or feeling happens)___ I will consider this a success”
3.) Are there components to my action plan or stages to the success I seek?
If so, write those out and try and make about three main steps or milestones to hit your main goal. Feel free to have your Coach help you with that. In fact, it may take up your WHOLE first call 😉 (It should…)
If there are more than 3 main goals that you’re looking to accomplish with your Coach… take a moment to whittle them down to the most critical ones first. Too many are no good. In fact… 1 thing is great because you can really focus on it and get errrr done!
What should I not do?
1.) Be vague and general to just “see how things go.”
2.) Assume the coach will do everything for you.
3.) Use one coach for everything (because you can have multiple coaches for different things)
So, one last time Corey, what’s a good coaching length?
Many Coaching agreements span for 30 days to 90 days. Depending on the nature of your goals and Coaching regimen, your agreement could be as long as 6 to 12 months. Just make sure to get it in writing after you get clarity on exactly what you’ll accomplish with your coach and have a detailed description of “How you’ll know when you’ve been successful!”
