How to create a contract or agreement with a Coach before hiring them?

how to create a coaching contract

Doesn’t have to be complicated… just done!

A good rule of thumb is to have an agreement or a contract for your Coaching terms (length), expectations, and scope of work. (What will they do for you and what will you do for them)

Here’s a few best practices for doing this effectively because I’ve personally screwed this up on many occasions as both a Coach and as a Client.

Most formal Coaching packages, courses and trainings use the contract from the “Sales Page, Order Page and Terms of Service” however, you could summarize those things you’re getting for your investment on a seperate piece of paper.

Why create a coaching contract again?

To make sure everybody is clear on what’s being delivered and so that you get everything that you need.

Unfortunately, lots of Coaches and clients go about their Coaching sessions without any “meeting of the minds” and often it leads to unmet expectations. Naturally, that can lead to negative consequences, bad reviews and hard feelings.

Here are a few tips for setting up your agreements and Coaching service contracts:

1.) Have Coaches send you an email with exactly what they are going to do for you, support you with and give you access to with your coaching package.

2.) Specify, time of contract, topic of coaching, price and expectations! Also be clear on what’s required of you, for example, being on time, doing homework, replying to emails in a certain timeframe, being honest, etc… Make sure both of you sign or acknowledge the final “working” agreement (meaning your agreement can be modified or added to in the future through mutually agreement).

3.) Always include a quick mention of what your benchmarks will be and even a worst case scenario that spells out, what it would look like if you two needed to discontinue your relationship.

Yes, that last part can be uncomfortable but very very worth the 2 mins of squirming.
